
History
Tomsk was founded by the Cossacks in 1604 on the banks of the River Tom by the decree of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The Cossacks called upon the Tatars to defend themselves against invasions of nomadic tribes. Tomsk received city status in 1629.
Nowadays
The area of the city is 294.6 km2. In the town. There are 574,002 people (2018) in the city. 20% of Tomsk residents are students. For example, in 2005 there were 100,000 people.
